Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary: An Invitation From the Pastor

Last year, for our 175th Anniversary at St. Mary of the Mills, I invited each parishioner to make an act of entrustment to Jesus through Mary on our parish feast day, September 8th, the Nativity of Mary.

This year, I would again like to invite each of us to make (or renew) this act of entrustment to Jesus through Mary on the weekend of our parish feast day, September 7 and 8th. To more fully make (or renew) this act of entrustment or consecration, I invite you to spend 33 days with me in preparation. Last year, to prepare for this consecration, the parish provided copies of the book, 33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael Gaitley (although there are other fine resources out there). The parish will again provide a limited number of copies of this same book after all Masses the weekend of July 27-28 for any parishioner who has yet to receive one.  —— Fr. Anthony Lickteig

“Ask [Our Lady] to teach... Her role is to bring you face to face with the love in the Heart of Jesus Crucified.”

To Jesus Through Mary

Are you searching for what God wants you to do with your life?  Do you want to trust in God more? Do you want to become a better and holier father or mother or wife or husband?  Or do you simply want to become a better instrument of God’s grace in the world?  If so, the answer is Marian Consecration. This means simply to entrust one’s whole life to Jesus through Mary.  By drawing us closer to Jesus Christ, Mary will help us understand what God wants us to do with our lives; she will help us trust in God’s love for us; she will help us to become a better and holier parent and spouse; she will form us into a more perfect instrument of God’s grace and love in the world; she will make all our actions fruitful.

Background

St. Louis de Montfort crafted the central idea for this consecration or entrustment in the 1700s with a short work entitled True Devotion to Mary. St. John Paul II read this work and said it became a “turning point” in his life. His consecration to Jesus through Mary was so important that he took as his papal motto de Montfort’s words summarizing this consecration: Totus Tuus (Totally Yours). St. Maximillian Kolbe said that “Through Mary, we can become great saints, and what is more, in an easy way.” St. Mother Teresa had a very particular devotion to Mary, as she wrote, “Because our Lady was there on Calvary, she knows how real, how deep is Jesus’ longing for you and for the poor. Do we feel as she? Ask her to teach…her role is to bring you face to face with the love in the Heart of Jesus crucified.”

Preparation Process

  • Resource. There are many resources out there, but the simplest is a book called: 33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC. Through the generosity of several donors, books (in English and Spanish) are available at no cost to you. Update: Books were distributed at all Masses on July 27 and 28 and a small number of books remain. If you would like to prepare for the consecration, you may obtain a book at the Parish Office or after Masses on August 4 and 5 while supplies last.

  • Preparation: To prepare for this consecration on your own, simply purchase the book and begin the series of daily readings and prayers on Tuesday, August 6.

The Consecration Itself

At each Mass on the weekend of our Parish Feast Day celebration - September 7th and 8th - those wishing to consecrate themselves to Jesus through Mary will have an opportunity to do so at the end of Mass.
